The Serious Matter of Being Silly

Do you ever find yourself laughing at your own mishaps? Are you open to turning embarrassing moments into lighthearted anecdotes, or do you adhere to a specific persona that keeps you firmly in your comfort zone?

Unleashing Childlike Joy

Recently, I had the joy of watching my 1.5-year-young niece dance with unabashed enthusiasm, embracing her clumsy yet adorable toddler-like movements. She laughed, flapped her arms, and found inspiration in her own reflection. It was a beautiful display of joy and spontaneity, leaving me both moved and a tad envious of her unfiltered curiosity and carefree exploration. Oh, how I wish for her to never lose this genuine delight in being silly, finding amusement simply in the pleasure of being alive!

Breaking Free from Masks

As we journey through life, many of us adopt masks and structures that stifle our creative expression, distancing us from the core of our joy and authenticity. Rules and societal expectations often replace our pursuit of self-expression and celebration. Pleasure becomes a secondary concern, something to be earned or deserved, while the relentless pursuit of a "serious adult life" takes the primary position. This subtle process, if left unchecked, can transform us into exhausted, dissatisfied, and possibly even boring adults who sacrifice their sense of wonder on the altar of solemnity and life's supposed importance.

Playfulness as a Productivity Tool

Surprisingly, playfulness can be a powerful tool for productivity and overall well-being. It fosters a positive and carefree atmosphere, encouraging social connections and enabling us to discover solutions beyond the confines of routine. Playfulness allows us to break away from the stress of daily life, approaching challenges with an open and adaptable mindset. Beyond its practical benefits, a playful mindset can be deeply spiritual, bringing joy to the moment and infusing a sense of lightness into our interactions and experiences.

The Liberation of Silly Self-Reflection

Approaching our vices and troubles with a playful and detached mindset yields invaluable benefits for mental well-being. By temporarily shedding the masks and personas we wear, we grant ourselves respite from neurotic behaviours, "shoulds," and obligations, allowing our untamed, childlike, and joyful selves to emerge. Moreover, if we let ourselves consciously and willingly yet humorously play out our personas, we might discover an unknown sense of liberation and integration for aspects we often feel too ashamed or embarrassed to acknowledge.

Building Resilience through Play

In the journey of life, developing the ability to pick ourselves up after a fall, summoning courage, strength, and the will to move forward is paramount. Playfulness becomes a crucial ally in building resilience, providing a mental break and a fresh perspective when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. By embracing a playful attitude, we equip ourselves to cope with stressors and bounce back from setbacks.

Serotonin-Infused Silliness

Let's not overlook the fact that being silly and playful releases serotonin, a neurotransmitter contributing to feelings of happiness and overall well-being. In simpler terms, being silly can shift our moods positively.

Balancing Seriousness with Play

It's important to note that choosing to be silly and laughing at ourselves doesn't invalidate our experiences. We can still feel genuine disappointment, sadness, heartbreak, embarrassment, guilt, and more. However, adopting a balanced, curious, and open approach to ourselves can help us navigate these emotions more effectively.

A Playful Prescription

So, the next time you're feeling a bit anxious or down, consider checking in with yourself. You might discover that what you truly need is to take yourself and your problems a little less seriously. Sing a song in a silly voice, make faces in the mirror, or indulge in creative pursuits without fixating on productivity. Take your example from children who just play. Better yet, find company to be silly with. If those close to you aren't up for it, seek out a safe space—perhaps a workshop, class, or event—that allows you to embrace the wonders of silliness. Whether through improvisation theatre, karaoke, stand-up comedy, or even picking up a new sport, find opportunities to fill yourself with childlike wonder, spontaneity, and laughter. Amaze yourself with how silly, playful, and joyful you can be.
